Chronic heart condition? Study suggests saunas may help

Friday, May 11th, 2012

A study performed at the University of Toyama in Japan reported on by New Scientist, a British science magazine, suggests that sauna use may help those with chronic heart failure.

Forty-one participants suffering with chronic heart failure were asked to bathe in a sauna for fifteen minutes five days a week. Once the sauna session was complete, the subjects were asked to wrap themselves in a blanket for a half hour, helping to keep their body temperature elevated approximately 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit higher thank normal. The study period lasted three weeks.

Once the period ended, it was found that heart function had improved heart function and could exercise for longer periods. New Scientist noted that “Sauna treatment increased the heart’s ability to pump blood, and boosted the distance participants could walk in six minutes from 1,100 feet to 1,250 feet.” This 9% improvement was said to be “significant” for chronic heart failure patients.

The results also found improved function for the membrane lining the heart. This lining aids in controlling blood vessel diameter.

This study was conducted using traditional steam saunas. We have an entire line of Helo Saunas designed for the home that are easy to install. In fact, our smallest unit only requires a standard household outlet to operate!

We also have an entire line of infrared saunas available for those that can’t tolerate the high heat of a traditional sauna.

How do I take a sauna? Answers to commonly asked questions

Saunas from Oregon Hot TubWhile there are more and more Americans discovering the desire to own and enjoy a sauna at home every day, many are still unfamiliar with the best way to use a sauna to get maximum health and relaxation benefits. Here are some answers to common questions we’re asked about regular sauna use.

  1. How hot should my sauna be? Excellent question! Too many users think their sauna should be hot—way too hot. The end result is not staying in the sauna long enough to develop a good sweat, dehydration, and ultimately less toxin flush. If you are going to use a traditional steam sauna, the ideal temperature to heat up to for a healthful session is 150-175°; for an infrared sauna, the temperature needs to only be between 120 and 130°. (Note to self—just because the sauna controls can be set higher doesn’t mean it’s the optimal temperature for a good sauna session!)
  2. How long should I take a sauna? The minimum length of time ideal for a sauna session (sometimes referred to as an inning) is about 15 minutes. Truly, if you intend to use the sauna longer than 15 minutes, it’s good to do multiple innings with breaks from the sauna in-between. Take a 15 minute session, exit the sauna and cool down a bit for at least 5 minutes, then return to the sauna for the next 15 minute session. Be sure to hydrate with water throughout your sauna time, to ensure hydration and encourage toxin flushing.
  3. What about water on the rocks? No, not in your drink, on your sauna’s heater rocks! This is a matter of personal preference. If you’re using a traditional sauna with a heater that stores rocks, you can use the sauna dry. Of, if you prefer the steam experience, you can toss some water on the heater rocks periodically to generate the steam experience. All Helo traditional steam saunas  include heaters that can be used dry or with steam—your choice.
  4. How should I wrap my sauna session? Definitely hop in a shower to rinse your skin of toxins and salts flushed during the sauna. This will also help close your pores. Wash your hair to cleanse any oil buildup. Once you’ve showered, moisturize with a good lotion—one enhanced with vitamins and nutrients. Also, continue to hydrate for at least an hour, to replenish the liquids expelled during your sauna time.

Celebrate Christmas Eve the Finnish way…in the sauna

Friday, December 16th, 2011

For the Finns, much of the Yuletide celebration takes place not on Christmas Day itself, but instead on December 24th, Christmas Eve.

In Turku, which is the former capital of Finland, noon on Christmas Eve signifies the beginning of a 20 day period known as “Christmas Peace”. This declaration dates back to the 13th century, and used to be observed in many Nordic countries. Finland remains the one country to continue the tradition of a period of time when all are encouraged to avoid “noisy & rowdy behavior”.

A visit to the sauna by the entire family is part of the Christmas Eve tradition. Using the sauna for bathing and relaxation occurs in the afternoon prior to attending any of the evening’s festivities. Typically the remainder of the evening would be dedicated to attending church, a big dinner, and spending time with family and close friends.

Warming up the sauna at Christmas is an ancient Finnish custom. Rural Finns believed that the spirits of dead ancestors would visit to bathe in the sauna after sunset. The sauna was regarded as a holy place—a place for giving birth, dying, and treating and healing sickness. It’s no surprise that many Finns regard the sauna as a symbol for purity—and why taking a Christmas Eve sauna brings cleansing and peace.

Perhaps Joulupukki (the Finnish equivalent for Father Christmas) will deliver a Helo Sauna to your home this holiday season? With a terrific array of traditional steam saunas, we have something for everyone to help you create your own “Christmas Peace” tradition.

To you and yours, the very best this holiday season.

Fight the cold & flu season with regular sauna bathing.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

We’re definitely in the depths of the cold and flu season in November. You can probably travel through your day now and find someone sneezing, coughing, and sniffling…yikes! How do you guard against succumbing to the throes of your own flu or cold dilemma??

One surefire way to boost your body’s natural cold and flu defense is by regular sauna use.

A study was conducted by the University of Vienna, Austria regarding the incidence of common colds. In the study, 25 volunteers incorporated sauna bathing into their life for a six month period. At the end of the study, it was noted that those regularly sauna bathing found a reduced incidence of common cold affliction. In fact, the final three months of the study found fewer cold issues than the initial three months. This would suggest that, the longer sauna use is made part of your routine, the better your body’s immune defenses increase to help combat viruses that cause the common cold.

Why? Well, it’s well known that sauna use increases white blood cell production—your body’s natural combatants against all infection. It’s also known that sitting in a room at elevated temperatures helps your body kill off bacteria that can’t thrive in higher degree environments. Sweating that occurs in a sauna session also helps your body flush toxins that could break down your body’s natural immune system. Regular sauna use can help your body get the “immunity exercising” needed to get you through the cold and flu season!

Don’t have a sauna? Let’s fix that—right now! We have a terrific array of both traditional steam and infrared saunas available. Some are completely portable and plug into a standard household outlet! Visit us today to explore our entire line of Helo Saunas, and give you and your loved ones another weapon to guard against cold and flu this winter.
