Make a swim spa part of your triathlon training

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

tidalfitswimspaTriathlon season is just around the corner. Conditioning your body to peak performance for each leg of your race is always a challenge and a reward. Consider making a swim spa part of your training for the big day.

Using a swim spa will absolutely help you get the edge for the swim portion of a triathlon. Using the jets to create increasingly stronger currents to swim against will prepare you for whatever you might endure when it comes time to take the plunge during the race.

If you know what the water temperature will roughly be at the time of year you’ll be competing, you can adjust the temperature of your swim spa to help mimic the body of water’s temp. This will help you mentally prepare for how cold the water might be, as well as help you decide what you might gear up in for the swim portion of your race.

In order to help time your swim, you might consider purchasing one of Garmin’s Swim Watches. This great watch will detect your type of swim stroke automatically. It will track your lengths, strokes & distance as you train. And, when you’re done, you can wirelessly upload your workout data—time, pace, and track your efficiency.

A swim spa will also give you the edge on the transition from swim to cycle. You can stage your bike near your swim spa, “compete” in the first leg of the race in your swim spa, then work on your transition from water to bike.

If you’re a triathlete, consider investing in your own TidalFit Swim Spa. If this type of competition is your passion, a swim spa makes perfect sense for training, conditioning, and—just as importantly—for your post-training reward to soak away any muscle and joint soreness. Take a moment to swing by (or bike over to!) your nearest Oregon Hot Tub showroom. Feel free to bring your suit and hop into a swim spa for a test swim. We guarantee you’ll love it!

Jack’s First 30 Days of Infrared Sauna Use

Friday, March 22nd, 2013

saunacat2I wanted to report back to everyone on my first full 30 days of non-stop use of my Finnleo Low EMR/EF Infrared Sauna. First off, I love it!!!  Secondly, my sauna sweat has become a daily routine that I cannot do without!

Usually, I am in my sauna (each and every evening – no exception) for 40-45 minutes.  I use my sauna at about 130-140 degrees for maximum sweating.  This usually starts about 18-20 minutes in and the perspiration is very intense within 5 minutes.  I bring in a bottle of cold ice water (which stays cold, surprisingly, during the entire sauna) and hydrate while sweating.  I leave the chromatherapy colored lights on “loop” mode and they slowly cycle through the various colors.  I use a hand towel for constant wipe down of my skin and I also sit on a fluffy towel to absorb moisture before getting to the bench.

I can truly report the follow results to date:

  • I sweat, sweat, sweat.  It’s easy to understand when you’ve totally saturated a large hand towel with perspiration at how much your body is flushing clean your system (and easing the work of kidneys).
  • I’ve noticed back pain relief and other nagging pains disappear almost immediately (within the first 2-3 uses)
  • My skin is much, much softer and has a natural glow to it. My girlfriend definately has noticed how different and better my skin feels and looks.
  • It’s much easier to breath NATURALLY and DEEPLY than in traditional saunas (even though your body is sweating like crazy at the higher temps!)
  • When I get out of the sauna and after a cold shower, there’s a natural euphroria I feel as well that last until I fall asleep (I do not sauna right before bed as I notice it energizes me as well for about an hour or two so usually sauna in early evening).
  • I’ve lost about 5 lbs without making any other significant changes to my diet or exercise routine.
  • I’m drinking much more water generally now.
  • I’ve also noticed a more mood stabilizing effect.  Overall I feel more relaxed and less stressed throughout the day and when does stress occurs, it tends to be less intense.
  • I’ve noticed the COLD water when showering right afterwards has become much less “cold”.  It’s hard to explain, but after each sauna session now when I take a cold shower plunge (and I mean COLD when you first turn on the tap COLD), I do not notice it as much as I did when I first started to sauna…it’s much more bearable and soothing almost

I will say on Day 25, I did come down with a slight cold.  I continued to use my sauna during the 2-3 days the cold was at it’s worst.  I can report that using the sauna would knock back the cold symptoms quite a bit and I felt stronger after using it for the next few hours until bed.

(And my cat loves it as well and usually joins me for at least 10-15 minutes a night.)

Happy Thanksgiving from Oregon Hot Tub

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with friends, family and take the time to re-connect with folks you may not get a chance to see much during the crazy days of your life. We’d like to offer up some extra ways to give thanks this coming Thursday.

  • Ask a family member to write a unique poem or prayer to recite prior to sitting down to Thanksgiving dinner. Offering a chance for everyone to stop for a moment and reflect with some heartfelt words will set the mood for a great dinner.
  • Make extra room at your table for someone who doesn’t have anyone to share Thanksgiving with: a widow, single person without family nearby, a friend who has recently lost someone close to them, or someone you know who just seems to find themselves alone during the holiday.
  • Ask individuals that attend your Thanksgiving festivities to share their favorite Thanksgiving  story or memory. Stories that help us remember someone fondly, or are especially funny can help make the day even more special.
  • Watch a great feel-good movie together. Or, find the new feel-good movie at your nearby movie theater.
  • Take a walk through a local park or around a local pond or lake. Take in the beauty of nature, and give thanks for the world we enjoy every day.
  • Volunteer at a local charity that helps feed the homeless and the hungry on Thanksgiving. Giving cheer to others is important every day, and especially at this time of year.
  • Identify a new charity to support, either with your time or your money. There are thousands of great organizations that will welcome your support. You can find ideas a www.volunteermatch.org.

However you celebrate the holiday, take a moment for some personal reflection and give thanks for everything that has transpired in the last year, both good and bad. Every day we live—and the challenges and celebrations of each of those days—shape us and make us unique individuals.

Oregon Hot Tub gives thanks as well! We thank and appreciate everyone who makes our company a vital part of Oregon & Southwest Washington’s community: our customers, our great employees, our vendor partners, and our friends. We could not do what we do without all of you!

Our best wishes for a safe and healthy Thanksgiving!

Hot Tub Sale Bend, Hot Tubs Portland OR – Easing Pain – How a Hot Tub Can Help

Monday, November 19th, 2012

Millions of Americans suffer every day with aches and pains. Whether it’s an old sports injury, chronic back pain or discomfort from arthritis, when we hurt, we’re often stopped in our tracks. Finding safe and effective pain relief is often a challenge, and many people suffer needlessly. Luckily, hot tub hydrotherapy- heat, massage and buoyancy- can provide short term and long term benefits by soothing pain, promoting repair and preventing further damage. Using a hot tub regularly is an easy, convenient and all natural solution.

Heat – Heat has long been associated with physical comfort and has been used for centuries to soothe and promote relaxation. But as a natural pain reliever, nothing comes close to the remarkable effects of heat. Submerging your body into a hot tub eases pain instantly. Pain results from tension in the muscles and surrounding tissue which restricts blood circulation. Sitting in a heated hot tub dilates blood vessels, increases blood circulation and enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to affected areas. Heat also stimulates the sensory receptors in the skin, which decrease pain signals to the brain.

Massage – Massage therapy eases pain by increasing mobility and relaxing sore muscles. Studies confirm that consistent use of a hot tub with massaging jets keeps joints moving by preserving strength and increasing flexibility. Pain is eliminated as targeted massage penetrates deep beneath the skin where pain is present. Tension in the neck, lower back and shoulder can be eliminated in just a few minutes several times a week. And with massage therapy available any time from the convenience of home, a hot tub is a tremendous relief.

Buoyancy – One of the best long term pain relieving qualities of a hot tub is buoyancy or that feeling of weightlessness that occurs when you submerge yourself in the water. From the moment you slip into a hot tub, tension, stress and pressure is eliminated from muscles and joints, decreasing pain. Buoyancy allows for increased range of motion and exercise is easier, leading to improved mobility over time. A hot tub provides a gentle environment for moving joints while providing natural resistance.

For many of us, pain is a normal, recurring part of everyday life. We work hard, we play hard and millions of us suffer from wear and tear, overuse or chronic conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia. Luckily, using a hot tub is an easy, effective and completely natural way to relieve pain and provide much needed relaxation for many.

Want to build your hot tub into a deck? Take note of these tips!

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012

A lot of folks like the idea of a hot tub—but don’t like the idea of a box of water sitting free standing in their lovely backyard. We get it, but you absolutely want to make sure you set yourself up for the best ownership experience long term if you build your hot tub in to a deck or other setting. Take note of the following tips when setting your hot tub in a built-in scenario.

Provide a good level foundation. Setting a hot tub on gravel or timbers that can settle over time when the tub will be surrounded by a deck or other surfaces is not the best idea. Get the space prepared, pour a concrete pad that’s a minimum of 4”, and make the pad LEVEL. No slope, please.

Building at tub in up to the lip of the shell? Maybe not the best idea. Enough studies have now been done on hot tub safety and use to indicate building a tub flush to any surface is not a great idea. It’s attractive, yes…but, it makes it easy for animals to walk over and damage hot tub covers, or kids (or, ahem, inebriated adults) to accidentally walk right into or fall into an open hot tub. It’s also less stressful on your back to step into a tub that is built in at seat height than to lower your body down to climb in and out of a tub that’s flush to a surface. Consider leaving 12”-14” of your tub exposed above the deck line. It will make it safer and easier to use. It will also afford you the opportunity to use a cover lifter, for ease of cover operation and to aid in preventing the cover getting water logged too early in its life.

Equipment access is required, thank you. A hot tub has components that will need service at some point. Do not build a hot tub’s equipment side in to a deck with no access! This is painful for our service techs to discover when we head out to a house to do service. Without proper access to safely service the equipment, we may not be able to fix what ails your hot tub. And, in some cases, code now requires there be three feet of access in front of a tub’s equipment bay to service it, as well as six feet of unobstructed overhead clearance. This is what National Electric Code indicates as minimums to work on electrical equipment. If you’re going to build the equipment side of the tub in, be sure a removable access door is featured in the decking on that side, with no joists or beams in the way once the hatch is removed.

Have your contractor visit the hot tub showroom to get educated. If your contractor visits our showroom to ask questions and see the unit you intend to have built into the deck firsthand, many headaches and heartaches can be avoided! Remember—you’re hiring the contractor to create a terrific new beautiful hot tub and deck environment for you. You’re not hiring them to create nightmares for you down the line! If it’s easier for everyone, schedule an in-home consultation with an Oregon Hot Tub sales pro. We can meet you and your contractors at your backyard to offer suggestions, hints and make sure everyone is set up for success.

Provide drainage. If you’re going to recess the tub below grade and then build it in, be sure proper drainage is provided in the concrete that’s poured so no standing water builds up around your hot tub. You’ll want to avoid any excess water getting to the depth it could invade your tub’s equipment compartment and cause damage to components.

Lastly, if you like the idea of a built-in hot tub, consider one of our Hot Spring Highlife Collection models available with Custom Cabinetry. You can finish the exterior of the tub with any materials your desire to match your backyard, or add our optional SpaStone cabinet for a high end built-in look at a fraction of the cost! Custom Cabinetry models are available for the Vista, Grandee, Aria & Vanguard Hot Spring models.

Finally—show it off! Once your installation is finished, we’d love to see some photos of your new paradise! Others can benefit from your good ideas, and will admire the beautiful backyard enhancements you’ve created.
