Swim Spas Aid in Injury Recovery

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

One of the benefits of owning a swim spa is the ability to better recover from certain injuries. Many physical therapists can help develop an aquatic therapy to assist with a variety of issues, including arthritis and healing from fractured bones. It can also allow an individual with weight challenges to exercise with less stress to the body.

The major key in any of these therapy regimens is the buoyancy afforded by exercising and stretching in water. Since water relieves pressure placed on joints and supports much of an individual’s body weight through buoyancy, it becomes much easier and less painful when exercising or stretching.

The resistance exercising and stretching in water provides allows muscle strengthening without the use of weights. You can increase muscle strength, decrease joint stress, and may be able to exercise for a longer period than possible when trying a similar regimen outside of a pool or swim spa environment. If it can be managed, there are weights and additional resistance that can be created through the use of aqua fit training gloves.

For joint sprains and ligament tears, water therapy provides the opportunity to use hydrostatic pressure for recovery. Hydrostatic pressure occurs when weight is exerted downward over water (by a human body in this case). For these types of injuries, hydrostatic pressure helps the patient become aware of join position and improve it, as well as decrease joint swelling. This can also be a plus when using water therapy for arthritic reasons.

Exercising and stretching in water will relax muscles, increase blood flow to injured areas, and in many cases make it much easier to do the recovery therapy needed for these types of injuries with less pain and quicker recovery times.

When the migraine comes, use your hot tub

Friday, December 30th, 2011

If you’re like me, those signals that a full-on migraine is on the way are never welcome. The next time you feel the start of a migraine attack, consider using your hot tub in conjunction with cold therapy.

Some studies suggest you can overcome a migraine more quickly by intermittent hot and cold therapy. What better way to do so than with your hot tub?

Here are the goals: increase circulation to your entire body; dilate blood vessels, massage neck tension (where some suggest migraines start), and provide a quiet place to escape the annoying throbbing in your head.

When you feel a migraine coming on, grab a cold compress—a couple if you have them handy. Head out to the hot tub, and get yourself full immersed. Increasing circulation to your extremities will immediately help dilate blood vessels in your feet and hands. It will not only feel good, it will also help encourage increased circulation to your entire body, and relieve some of the pressure of a migraine.

Next, try the jets—especially on your upper back and neck. Some experts agree that tension in the neck area seems to encourage the onset of a migraine. Getting massage to the upper back and neck to relieve some of that tension and massage sore muscles will relax you, and help encourage endorphins—your body’s natural “feel good” (or in this case, “feel better”) response.

Once you’ve been in the water soaking for at least five minutes, take a cold compress and place it on your forehead for a five minute interval. Once you’ve completed that process, return to soaking with jets for another five minutes followed by a second cold compress application. (Some might find additional relieve by alternating the position of the compress between the forehead and the back of the neck.)

Continue this exercise for at least a 20 minute period. The combination of increased circulation, neck and upper back massage, and alternating hot and cold should help alleviate your migraine symptoms.

Once you’ve completed this regimen, retreat to a dark, cool room in your home and rest your eyes. Your entire body will relax, and hopefully endorse a more rapid retreat of that pesky migraine.

Top 5 reasons to own a swim spa

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

With the introduction of TidalFit Swim Spas to our lineup of products at Oregon Hot Tub, we thought we’d give you five top reasons why getting a swim spa is a great idea:

  1. You’ll be healthier. With a swim spa at home, you’ll be able to take advantage of a swim daily. Swimming is good for burning calories, muscle toning, and improving respiratory and cardiovascular health. Nothing is more energizing than a quick swim to start out the day!
  2. For the kids. Kids not only love swimming, but it will also provide a great way to entertain their friends. You’ll be able to provide fun that will make them want to stay at home—where you can keep an eye on them. Plus—it will encourage your kids to learn how to swim if they’re still untrained, and teach them how to enjoy water without fear. A valuable life lesson!
  3. For your backyard. Take that unused portion of the backyard that never seems to get used much and transform it into one of the most desired pieces of real estate! You’ll end up enjoying your yard year round. (And hey—it will also cut down on the amount of lawn you’ll need to mow from now on!) It might also inspire you to do the backyard makeover you’ve always wanted.
  4. For rehabilitation. If someone you know has a sports injury, is wheelchair bound, or has problems exercising due to weight issues, a swim spa will provide a safe way to address health issues that could be otherwise a challenge.
  5. Training for runs, cycling and triathlons. A swim spa will help prepare you for the big marathon you’re training for, that century bike ride, or for the triathlon. Adding a swim spa routine to your training regimen will mix up your sessions, and provide a way to do resistance training without the extra wear on your joints.

This is just the start…there are likely many reasons you can think of that will make owning a swim spa the right answer for you. Water babies rejoice! We’ve got an entire line of energy-efficient TidalFit Swim Spas available. Visit us today and make a splash in your backyard!

Apparently, even bears love hot tubs!

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Even bears need to relax.

In June this year, a woman in Longwood, Florida had her TV watching interrupted when she discovered a black bear who decided to take a dip in her hot tub!

The hot tub was attached to Jenny Rhoades’s swimming pool, surrounded by a screen barrier. When the bear discovered the pool, he pushed his way through a portion of the screen, breaking into the pool and hot tub space. After a bit of a drink from the hot tub, the bear apparently decided to take a dip for a few minutes. (Alas, no jets were running to soothe the bear’s aching muscles.)

After several minutes of enjoyable soaking, the homeowner decided it was time to get the bear on its merry way—and out of her hot tub. Her reason? She “didn’t want it getting used to using her spa”! Banging on a table, Jenny finally got the bear’s attention, and he emerged from the tub and lumbered off back through the hole it had created in the screen.

You can take a look at the video Jenny shot of her hot tub guest here.

Has anyone out there had some uninvited guests to their hot tub? We’d love to hear your stories!

Hot Tub Royalty—the Hot Spring Sovereign

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Few hot tubs in the entire hot tub industry have enjoyed a rich successful history as one of the most sold hot tub models ever. This month we celebrate with the Hot Spring Sovereign as our Spa of the Month.

Hot Spring was enjoying great success in the late ‘70s with the introduction of its first model, the Hot Spring Classic. As the company was finding its way early on, Jeff & John Watkins—the creators of Hot Spring Spas—ran into a bit of a dilemma. They discovered that folks in the Midwest and East Coast were not crazy about the idea of trotting out in the bitter winter cold to hop into a hot tub. (We’ve come a long way since then!) What people were asking for: a hot tub they could use outdoors in fall, spring and summer but use indoors in the harsh winter months.

Using their creativity, the first Sovereign was born. Our records date back to the Sovereign being introduced in 1984. Back then, it was introduced as the Indoor/Outdoor model. With a height of only 29” and dimensions of 6’4” X 7’5”, it could easily pass through a standard doorway to be moved inside. It only weighed 400 pounds, and like its sister the Classic, operated using just a dedicated 110V plug.

The idea worked, and the Sovereign found its place as hot tub royalty. It’s also one of the earlier hot tubs in the industry to win the Consumer Digest Best Buy award, way back in 1992.

Times have changed, and we’ve all grown up with hot tubs now—and the Sovereign has grown up too! Today’s Sovereign sports great jet variety, a Soothing Stream water feature, the ability to naturally sanitize with the innovative ACE Salt Water System, and more.

Are you ready to feel like royalty every night of the week? Visit Oregon Hot Tub today and check out the Hot Spring Sovereign.
