Is the secret to perpetual youth…taking saunas?

Wednesday, November 30th, 2011

Saunas from Oregon Hot TubBelieve it or not, November 30th is known as Perpetual Youth Day. Why? It happens to be the birthday of America’s oldest teenager, Dick Clark. This year marks Dick’s 82nd birthday.

Everyone marvels at how youthful Dick appeared for years. While we all can’t hope to inherit Mr. Clark’s incredible genes and somehow tap into his personal Fountain of Youth, we can do something that Finns discovered hundreds of years ago—partake in regular sauna use.

Did you know how terrific sauna use is in producing healthy, glowing skin? Regular sauna use can help get rid of acne, dry flaky skin, open up clogged pores, and reduce wrinkles, blackheads and zits!

Sitting in a sauna causes the blood vessels in the skin to dilate to accommodate the increased blood flow brought on by the higher temperature in the room. In fact, blood flow to the skin increases from the typical 5-10% up to as high as 50-70%! Increased blood flow brings vital nutrients to subcutaneous and surface tissue. This encourages cellular activity and new skin growth.

The high temperature of a sauna also promotes essential fluids traveling to the skin’s surface. These fluids encourage collagen production—which in turn helps your skin achieve elasticity and discourages wrinkles!

Sauna use also frees your skin of trapped toxins and particles that irritate the skin and cause zits, blackheads and acne conditions. It could also help your skin resist eczema and athlete’s foot.

A Finnish doctor once wrote, “The best-dressed of foreigners can come into a doctor’s office, and when his skin is examined, it is found to be rough as bark. On the other hand, as a result of the sauna, the skin of any Finnish worker is supple and healthy.”

Aren’t you ready to have supple and healthy skin…and be the envy of everyone (maybe even Dick Clark!)? Then it’s time for you to check out our entire line of Helo Saunas. With a full range of traditional steam and infrared rooms to choose from, we’re certain you can be personally enjoying your own Fountain of Youth in no time!

Visit Vantaa for a First Class Sauna Experience

Saunas from Oregon Hot TubIf you ever plan a trip to Finland, here’s a terrific way to spend part of your stay. The Flamingo Spa in Vantaa offers a terrific way to spend an afternoon or a full day!

Vantaa is about 12 miles outside of Helsinki. Not only can you enjoy multiple sauna experiences, there’s a water park to boot! Seven different water-oriented experiences await you, including a diving pool and a water channel pool. Many of the pool features at Flamingo feature some type of hydro-massage. Even the largest pool on the property, the Attraction Pool, offer up different air massage points while you take a swim. And, of course one of our favorite water attractions would be the whirlpool. Although it’s only heated to about 93 degrees, the whirlpool is the warmest water in the water park. The park also includes a number of water slides, ranging from the safer for kids to the more adventurous for adults.

Oh, and by the way, as it should be in any Finnish experience, there is a Finnish sauna in the water park connected to the shower area.

Once you wrap up your time at the water park, you could retreat to the spa and wellness side of Flamingo. Here you will find no less than four different types of experiences! It’s interesting to note that saunas here are infused with herbal aromatherapy. A traditional spruce sauna is one type offered, made from the same Nordic White Spruce found in our entire line of traditional steam and custom cut saunas. You can also choose to visit the Bio Sauna. This sauna has a higher level of humidity and a lower temperature, providing an option for those who don’t embrace the especially high heat of a traditional Finnish sauna.

Another feature in the sauna section is the “mill shower”. A fascinating idea, you stand in front of a mill wheel that proceeds to splash you with intermittent waves of hot and cold water to improve circulation.

You can also choose to visit the modern day version of a traditional steam bath, also infused with herbal aromatherapy, as well as soft lighting and soothing music.

And—it’s incredibly affordable! Flamingo’s site claims that you can enjoy a four hour visit to the Spa & Wellness side of the complex for 29-37 Euros, depending on whether you visit on a weekday or weekend. That converts to about $41-$53! (A visit to the water park is extra.)

There would be nothing like enjoying some water and sauna recreation the way the Finns do. If it sounds good to you, enter for a chance to win a trip to Helsinki through our Helo Saunas’ sister brand, Finnleo. Then, cross your fingers you’ll win and find yourself relaxing at the Flamingo Spa!

Apparently, even bears love hot tubs!

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Even bears need to relax.

In June this year, a woman in Longwood, Florida had her TV watching interrupted when she discovered a black bear who decided to take a dip in her hot tub!

The hot tub was attached to Jenny Rhoades’s swimming pool, surrounded by a screen barrier. When the bear discovered the pool, he pushed his way through a portion of the screen, breaking into the pool and hot tub space. After a bit of a drink from the hot tub, the bear apparently decided to take a dip for a few minutes. (Alas, no jets were running to soothe the bear’s aching muscles.)

After several minutes of enjoyable soaking, the homeowner decided it was time to get the bear on its merry way—and out of her hot tub. Her reason? She “didn’t want it getting used to using her spa”! Banging on a table, Jenny finally got the bear’s attention, and he emerged from the tub and lumbered off back through the hole it had created in the screen.

You can take a look at the video Jenny shot of her hot tub guest here.

Has anyone out there had some uninvited guests to their hot tub? We’d love to hear your stories!

Hot tub soaking and Type 2 Diabetes

Saturday, November 19th, 2011

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. To mark the occasion, we thought it would be timely to remind readers of a hot tub study done to document the positive effects for those with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitis.

In 1999 The New England Journal of Medicine published a report on the results of a study done with 8 individuals living with adult onset diabetes. The point behind the study was to determine whether hot tub soaking could benefit those living with diabetes that may not be able to regularly exercise.

In the study, led by Dr. Phillip Hooper of the McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado, the participants soaked in water up to 104 degrees for 30-minute periods. The users soaked six times per week during the study period, fully immersing their entire body up to the neck. At the end of the study period, the participants discovered they experienced weight loss, as well as a decrease in their blood sugar or glucose levels. In fact, one participant experienced an 18% drop in the insulin needed to regulate glucose level after just 10 days in the study.

Part of the reason for the positive results: regular hot tub use allows the body’s blood vessels to dilate, allowing the body to better use its insulin. Increasing circulation could also help with neuropathy, getting extra heat and circulation exposure to fingers and toes.

If you or someone you know is living with Type 2 Diabetes, it might be time to consider adding a hot tub at home for regular soaks. It could provide an entire new way to help regulate glucose and improve your overall health and sense of well being!

Schedule a test soak today at one of our showrooms. We’ll help you find the perfect hot tub to get you on the road to better health.

Fight the cold & flu season with regular sauna bathing.

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

We’re definitely in the depths of the cold and flu season in November. You can probably travel through your day now and find someone sneezing, coughing, and sniffling…yikes! How do you guard against succumbing to the throes of your own flu or cold dilemma??

One surefire way to boost your body’s natural cold and flu defense is by regular sauna use.

A study was conducted by the University of Vienna, Austria regarding the incidence of common colds. In the study, 25 volunteers incorporated sauna bathing into their life for a six month period. At the end of the study, it was noted that those regularly sauna bathing found a reduced incidence of common cold affliction. In fact, the final three months of the study found fewer cold issues than the initial three months. This would suggest that, the longer sauna use is made part of your routine, the better your body’s immune defenses increase to help combat viruses that cause the common cold.

Why? Well, it’s well known that sauna use increases white blood cell production—your body’s natural combatants against all infection. It’s also known that sitting in a room at elevated temperatures helps your body kill off bacteria that can’t thrive in higher degree environments. Sweating that occurs in a sauna session also helps your body flush toxins that could break down your body’s natural immune system. Regular sauna use can help your body get the “immunity exercising” needed to get you through the cold and flu season!

Don’t have a sauna? Let’s fix that—right now! We have a terrific array of both traditional steam and infrared saunas available. Some are completely portable and plug into a standard household outlet! Visit us today to explore our entire line of Helo Saunas, and give you and your loved ones another weapon to guard against cold and flu this winter.
